Concerns over energy prices and the role installers can play to support homeowners revealed in new research
New research1 from Resideo, the global developer and manufacturer of Honeywell Home heating controls, shows European homeowners see heating controls as a critical way to tackle energy cost concerns - opening up opportunities for installers to add value and support their customers.
The survey investigating the energy attitudes of 6,000 homeowners across France, Spain, Germany, Belgium, UK and the Netherlands revealed:
- French homeowners are the most concerned about energy costs (83%), while the Dutch are feeling slightly more relaxed, with just 41% expressing their concern. (Spain 78%, UK 70%, Belgium 64%, Germany 60%).
- Around a third of homeowners in each country are less likely to switch their heating on this winter due to energy price concerns (Netherlands 35%, Belgium and UK 33%, and France and Spain 30%.) However, only 16% of Germans said they were planning to take this route.
- Around half of homeowners feel like they need more information or are unconfident about setting their heating controls correctly to get the best out of their system – Spain (57%), UK (53%), Germany and Belgium (52%), Netherlands (51%) and France (50%).
- Nearly half of Spanish homeowners (49%) would consider spending money on the right heating controls to tackle energy costs, followed by 45% of Germans and Belgians, 41% from UK, 38% from Netherlands and 34% from France.
- Spain 71% also leads the way in feeling more environmentally aware due to recent energy challenges. Something seen across Europe – Germany (64%) (Netherlands (63%), France (61%), Belgium (60%), and UK (46%).
Installers are on the front line of tackling energy challenges
It is clear many European consumers need some help to optimise their energy management. And, as Resideo's heating season campaign aims to demonstrate, Resideo offers many Honeywell Home solutions that heating professionals can recommend to help their customers control and optimise their heating system – be that with a heat pump control, an easy-to-use thermostat, such as the award-winning Honeywell Home DT4, or smart app-based control.
Growing interest in low-carbon heating technologies
When it came to questions about heating solutions such as heat pump installation, each country offered a positive response. Spain’s homeowners are most interested (24%), with nearly a quarter expressing a wish to look at the technology further. German homeowners were next in the ranking at 23%. When thinking about updating heating systems, 22% in Belgium, 18% in the Netherlands and UK, and 12% in France, said heat pumps would be on their radar when the time came.
Worryingly, some European homeowners admitted to never having checked that their heating controls are running effectively: France (16%), Netherlands (12%), UK (9%), Belgium (8%), Spain (6%) and Germany (4%). However, this is maybe the easiest challenge to resolve by taking action and making that long overdue check.
Luke Cairns, European Product Management Leader, from Resideo comments: “It is clear is that energy bills and how to reduce them as much as possible remains front of mind with many European homeowners, and it's driving some fundamental behavioural change such as being more environmentally aware. Installers have a key role to play in providing solutions to the challenges their customers are facing. They are on the heating control front line and can proactively provide guidance, recommending the most suitable heating controls and advising on how to optimise their energy management."
