Voltus and Resideo Grid Services Help Meet Growing Demand in PJM

Resideo’s Grid Services team helps more Pennsylvania residents save energy to strengthen the grid

As energy demand continues to rise, more Pennsylvania residents now have a new way to help support the grid and their community while saving money. Resideo Grid Services and its partner Voltus, a leading distributed energy resource technology platform and virtual power plant (VPP) operator, are expanding their residential demand response program to include customers in PECO’s service area. The program, available to customers with Resideo’s Honeywell Home smart thermostats, and other qualifying smart thermostat brands, adjusts energy usage during peak times, helping to balance the grid while lowering electricity costs. Participants can enroll in the Connected Savings program through the First Alert or Resideo app or PECO program website.

"Energy challenges are growing due to increasing demand and grid complexity, but so are opportunities for consumers to be part of the solution," said Dave Oberholzer, General Manager of Resideo Grid Services. "By expanding our offerings into new territories, we’re enabling more households across additional markets to take an active role in strengthening the grid by automatically shifting energy use when it matters most. In addition to grid benefits, we want these programs – where customers can save on energy costs – available to as many Resideo customers as possible.”

Since launching in Pennsylvania (PPL) in 2022, the Resideo and Voltus partnership has expanded to three utility zones in PJM – PPL, ComEd and now PECO – as well as PSEG Long Island in NYISO. This latest expansion allows even more households to take part while unlocking additional savings through PJM’s real-time economic demand response program, which provides more frequent opportunities for grid participation.

PJM, the largest wholesale electricity market in the U.S., recently projected a 35% increase in summer peak load by 2034, while 58 GW of traditional power plants are expected to retire by 2030. Last summer’s record-high capacity auction underscored the growing need for new energy solutions, and the U.S. Department of Energy estimates that virtual power plants could help meet 10-20% of peak demand nationwide.

“As electrification accelerates and industries like data centers drive up demand for electricity, solutions like VPPs are becoming increasingly important, said Marissa Galizia, Senior Sales Director, Product Partnerships at Voltus. “By expanding demand response capabilities, this program makes it easy for consumers to contribute to a more resilient grid while directly benefiting from energy savings.”
